Alle ore 16.30 di oggi, Memoria della Beata Maria Vergine di Lourdes, l'Em.mo
Card. Camillo Ruini, Vicario Generale di Sua Santità per la Diocesi di Roma,
celebra nella Basilica Vaticana la Santa Messa per gli ammalati dell'UNITALSI ed
i pellegrini dell'Opera Romana Pellegrinaggi, in occasione della XV Giornata
Mondiale del Malato che quest'anno ha per tema: "La cura pastorale e spirituale
dei malati con patologie incurabili".
Terminata la Celebrazione Eucaristica,
verso le ore 17.30 il Santo Padre Benedetto XVI giunge in Basilica per benedire
i malati e rivolgere loro il discorso che riportiamo di seguito: DISCORSO DEL SANTO PADRE
Cari fratelli e sorelle,
con grande gioia
vi incontro qui, nella Basilica Vaticana, in occasione della festa della Madonna
di Lourdes e dell'annuale Giornata Mondiale del Malato, al termine della
Celebrazione eucaristica presieduta dal Cardinale Camillo Ruini. A lui, in primo
luogo, rivolgo il mio cordiale saluto, che estendo a tutti voi qui presenti:
all'Arciprete della Basilica, Mons. Angelo Comastri, agli altri Vescovi, ai
sacerdoti, ai religiosi e alle religiose. Saluto i responsabili e i membri
dell'UNITALSI, che si occupano del trasporto e della cura degli ammalati nei
pellegrinaggi e in altri momenti significativi. Saluto i responsabili e i
pellegrini dell'Opera Romana Pellegrinaggi e quanti prenderanno parte al XV
Convegno Nazionale Teologico-Pastorale, che vedrà l'adesione di molti
dall'Italia e dall'estero. Saluto, inoltre, la delegazione dei rappresentanti
dei "Cammini d'Europa". Ma il saluto più cordiale vorrei indirizzarlo a voi,
cari ammalati, ai vostri familiari e ai volontari che con amore vi seguono e vi
accompagnano anche quest'oggi. Insieme a tutti voi desidero unirmi a coloro che
in questo stesso giorno prendono parte ai vari momenti della Giornata Mondiale
del Malato che si tiene nella città di Seul, in Corea. Là, a mio nome, presiede
le celebrazioni il Cardinale Javier Lozano Barragán, Presidente del Pontificio
Consiglio della Pastorale per gli Operatori Sanitari.
Quest'oggi dunque è la
festa della Beata Vergine Maria di Lourdes, che poco meno di centocinquanta anni
or sono apparve a una semplice ragazza, S. Bernardetta Soubirous, manifestandosi
come l'Immacolata Concezione. Anche in quella apparizione la Madonna si è
mostrata tenera madre verso i suoi figli, ricordando che i piccoli, i poveri
sono i prediletti di Dio ed a loro è rivelato il mistero del Regno dei cieli.
Cari amici, Maria, che con la sua fede ha accompagnato il Figlio fin sotto la
croce, Lei che fu associata per un disegno misterioso alle sofferenze di Cristo,
suo Figlio, mai si stanca di esortarci a vivere e a condividere con serena
fiducia l'esperienza del dolore e della malattia, offrendola con fede al Padre,
completando così ciò che manca nella nostra carne ai patimenti di Cristo (cfr
Col 1,24). A questo riguardo, mi tornano in mente le parole con le quali il mio
venerato predecessore Paolo VI concludeva l'Esortazione apostolica Marialis
cultus: "All'uomo contemporaneo, non di rado tormentato tra l'angoscia e la
speranza, prostrato dal senso dei suoi limiti e assalito da aspirazioni senza
confini, la Beata Vergine Maria, contemplata nella sua vicenda evangelica e
nella realtà che già possiede nella Città di Dio, offre una visione serena e una
parola rassicurante: la vittoria della speranza sull'angoscia, della comunione
sulla solitudine, della pace sul turbamento, della gioia e della bellezza sul
tedio e la nausea, delle prospettive eterne su quelle temporali, della vita
sulla morte" (n. 57). Sono parole che illuminano il nostro cammino, anche quando
sembra svanire il senso della speranza e la certezza della guarigione; sono
parole che vorrei fossero di conforto specialmente per quanti sono colpiti da
malattie gravi e dolorose.
Ed è proprio a questi nostri fratelli
particolarmente provati che l'odierna Giornata Mondiale del Malato dedica la sua
attenzione. Ad essi vorremmo far sentire la vicinanza materiale e spirituale
dell'intera comunità cristiana. È importante non lasciarli nell'abbandono e
nella solitudine mentre si trovano ad affrontare un momento tanto delicato della
loro vita. Meritevoli sono pertanto coloro che con pazienza ed amore mettono a
loro servizio competenze professionali e calore umano. Penso ai medici, agli
infermieri, agli operatori sanitari, ai volontari, ai religiosi e alle
religiose, ai sacerdoti che senza risparmiarsi si chinano su di essi, come il
buon Samaritano, non guardando alla loro condizione sociale, al colore della
pelle o all'appartenenza religiosa, ma solo a ciò di cui abbisognano. Nel volto
di ogni essere umano, ancor più se provato e sfigurato dalla malattia, brilla il
volto di Cristo, il quale ha detto: "Ogni volta che avete fatto queste cose a
uno solo di questi miei fratelli più piccoli, l'avete fatto a me" (Mt 25,
40).
Cari fratelli e sorelle, tra poco una suggestiva fiaccolata farà
rivivere il clima che si crea tra i pellegrini e i devoti a Lourdes, al calare
della sera. Il pensiero nostro va alla grotta di Massabielle, dove si incrociano
il dolore umano e la speranza, la paura e la fiducia. Quanti pellegrini,
confortati dallo sguardo della Madre, trovano a Lourdes la forza di compiere più
facilmente la volontà di Dio anche quando costa rinuncia e dolore, consapevoli
che, come afferma l'apostolo Paolo, tutto concorre al bene di coloro che amano
il Signore (cfr Rm 8, 28). La candela, che tenete accesa tra le mani, sia anche
per voi, cari fratelli e sorelle, il segno di un sincero desiderio di camminare
con Gesù, fulgore di pace che rischiara le tenebre e ci spinge, a nostra volta,
ad essere luce e sostegno per chi ci vive accanto. Nessuno, specialmente chi si
trova in condizioni di dura sofferenza, si senta mai solo e abbandonato. Tutti
vi affido questa sera alla Vergine Maria. Lei, dopo aver conosciuto indicibili
sofferenze, è stata assunta in Cielo, dove ci attende e dove anche noi speriamo
di poter condividere un giorno la gloria del suo divin Figlio, la gioia senza
fine. Con questi sentimenti imparto la mia Benedizione a voi tutti qui presenti
e a quanti vi sono cari.
